Lab tour
Roll the credits.
The Chang Lab is not just a run-of-the-mill chemistry and biology research lab. Sure, we’re here to solve bucket loads of big chemistry problems but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a lot of fun doing it. On occasion, we’ve been mistaken for a 1980s TV sitcom but we can’t quite imagine why…
Research in the Chang Lab.
Our research integrates chemical biology, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry to create new technologies and gain new understanding of chemistry and biology. Students in the lab receive cross-disciplinary, fundamental training in experimental techniques.
Shared Biochemistry Benches
We have dedicated shared lab benches for Western Blotting, running gels, cloning, DNA/RNA purification, etc.
Synthetic Chemistry Instruments
A microwave reactor, automated silica chromatography, and a dishwasher speed up the ability to do organic synthesis to make new activity-based sensing reagents and catalysts.
Confocal Microscope
Our in house confocal microscope is utilized to test activtiy-based sensors in living cells.
Fluorometer
We measure the properties of new fluorescent reagents on our fluorometer.
Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography
Protein targets from our chemoproteomics lists are purified on our FPLC.
Gas Chromatography
Synthetic products can be analyzed on our GCMS.
Glove Box
Air-free reactions for the Artificial Photosynthesis subgroup are performed in the glovebox.
Group Room
We have a kitchenette and group table for lunch and group bonding. You can find us playing Super Smash Brothers before group meeting on Wednesday nights.
Synthetic Chemistry
Each lab member has dedicated space to perform synthetic chemistry.
High Performance Liquid Chromatography
An HPLC allows purification of synthetic products.
Inorganic Chemistry Instruments
We have an instrument wing dedicated to characterizing catalysts for artificial photosynthesis.
Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry
We can characterize synthetic reactions and perform assays on the LCMS.
Shared Chemistry Benches
We have shared chemistry benches for rotovapping and beyond.
Solvent Purification System
Anhydrous solvents can be collected in house on our SPS.
Tissue and Cell Culture Hoods
We have two tissue culture hoods for cell culture and cell experiments.
Bio Glove Box
Metals in biology experiments are performed in the bio glovebox.
Flow Cytometer
The flow cytometer allows for more quantitative cell experiments.
Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer
The ICP-MS allows for laser ablation to quantify metals in tissue samples.
